PETG Filament: The Complete Guide for 3D Printing in Jordan

PETG Filament: The Complete Guide for 3D Printing in Jordan

What is PETG?

PETG (Polyethylene Terephthalate Glycol) is a modified version of the same plastic used in water bottles. The addition of glycol makes it easier to print while retaining PET's excellent chemical resistance, clarity, and food-safe properties.

PETG Properties at a Glance

  • Tensile strength: ~50 MPa (stronger than PLA)
  • Heat resistance: Up to 80°C (better than PLA, worse than ABS)
  • Flexibility: Slightly flexible — resists impact better than PLA
  • Chemical resistance: Excellent — resists most acids, bases, and solvents
  • Food safety: FDA-compliant — suitable for food contact items
  • Price at Jordan3DPrint: 0.12 JD per gram

When to Choose PETG Over PLA

Choose PETG when your part needs to:

  • Survive temperatures above 60°C (dashboard items, outdoor use in Jordanian summer)
  • Handle mechanical stress — brackets, clips, structural components
  • Contact food or liquids
  • Be used outdoors — PETG has better UV resistance than PLA
  • Be semi-transparent — PETG can be printed in beautiful translucent colors

When to Stick with PLA Instead

PLA is still better when cost is the primary concern, the part is purely decorative, or you need a very wide range of colors. At 0.07 JD/g vs PETG's 0.12 JD/g, PLA is 40% more affordable.

PETG in Jordan's Climate

Jordan's hot summers (Amman reaches 40°C+ regularly) mean that PLA parts left in parked cars or direct sun can warp. PETG's 80°C heat resistance makes it a much safer choice for any part that might be exposed to heat.
